For decades, scientists have thought that having the human genome decoded would allow them to understand all human characteristics and diseases. Now, after finding out that humans have fewer than 30,000 genes (instead of 100,000 as previously thought), there are many human characteristics and diseases that can't be explained by traditional genetics and the 30,000 genes alone.
Comes the emerging field of Epigenetics. It examines human characteristics and diseases in terms of genetic switches and transgenerational effects.
This is the BBC series.
